| It's that time of year again when every week seems to have a Bank Holiday in it. I'm not complaining in any way about the extra long weekends coming up, I am aware of the problems some employers have in calculating the holiday entitlements of their part time workers. I will try to explain how the entitlement is calculated: If I work here four days a week, I would be entitled to 4/5ths of the annual Bank Holidays, given that we currently have 8 Bank holidays per year I would be entitled to 6.4 Bank holidays. The easiest way to ensure that your staff are allocated the correct holiday allowance is to pro rata their total holiday and Bank holiday entitlement together and any time they take off, whether it is a Bank Holiday or not, it would come off their total entitlement for the year If you would like anymore information on how to calculate part time holidays please email hrdsupport@noblehr.co.uk or call 0870 050 1131, but don't call on a Bank Holiday, I'm on holiday! | Fit notes |

The DWP have recently published guidance for employers on the new "fit notes". From April 6th 2010, GP's will be able to certify that an employee "may be fit for work taking into account the following advice" as an alternative to the usual statement that they are "not fit for work". (This option does still exist). The Fit note is designed to encourage those off sick to return to work sooner rather than later, however there are concerns that this may not prove to be the case. A recent survey found that 75% of HR Professionals questioned thought the fit notes were a good idea, but only 17% believed they would reduce the length of sickness absence.
